How many planets make up our Solar System?
Explanation
Our solar system is made up of 8 planets because in 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) redefined what it means to be a planet. According to their new definition, a planet is a celestial body that orbits the Sun, is spherical in shape, and has cleared its orbit of other debris. Following these criteria, Pluto was reclassified as a "dwarf planet" as it did not meet the last condition of clearing its orbit. Consequently, the solar system now consists of Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune as the 8 recognized planets.
