What was the original name of New York City?

The original name of New York City was New Amsterdam. It was named so by Dutch colonizers, who established the settlement in 1626. However, the English later seized control of the colony in 1664 and renamed it New York, after the Duke of York and Albany, who became King James II of England. The renaming was a result of the Treaty of Breda, which ended the Second Anglo-Dutch War and transferred the colony to British rule.
